Deeply influenced by Frank Cornelissen, the guru of natural winemaking on Mount Etna, the Paternò family organically farms their land and makes wine with minimal intervention in the cellar. They respect the land and have created a polyculture to ensure ecosystem stability. Aromas of ripe dark-skinned fruit and a whiff of exotic spice lead the nose on this straightforward red. The medium-bodied palate offers prune, mature black cherry and a hint of star anise alongside dusty, but rather fleeting tannins that leave a tongue-drying finish. Organic

Review by: Antonio Galloni
Wine Advocate: Issue 171, June 2007
Rating: 88 points
Drink now - 2016

Consulting oenologist Carlo Ferrini oversees winemaking at Brancaia, which owns vineyards in the Chianti Classico and Morellino di Scansano zones. Brancaia's newest wine is Ilatraia, a blend of 60% Cabernet 30% Sangiovese and 10% Petit Verdot made from the estate's Maremma property. The 2004 shows a very pretty Maremma warmth in its expression of sweet dark fruit, herb, tobacco and earthiness, with good length and excellent overall balance. It spent 18 months in French oak. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2016.

BRUNO GIACOSA BAROLO FALLETTO DI SERRALUNGA D'ALBA, 2000 750ML

Review by: Daniel Thomases
Wine Advocate: Issue 160, October 2005
Rating: 94 points
Drink now - 2020

The 2000 Barolo Rocche di Falletto, from the best vineyards of Giacosa's own Serralunga d'Alba estate, is a horse of a different color. Equally intense, it is considerably fuller and rounder, fleshier on the mid-palate and finish than the Falletto, and decisively more complex in aroma with all the familiar notes of tar and roses, anisette and wild cherry fruit. Any comparisons with the 1999 version of this wine, however, richer, more nuanced, and more velvety, a Barolo which seems better every time it is tasted, are completely out of place. And to mention this wine in the same breath with the 1996 Barolo Falletto Riserva is a joke. Drink: 2006-2020.

Review by: Antonio Galloni
Wine Advocate: Issue 179, October 2008
Rating: 92 points
Drink 2012 - 2024

The 2004 Barolo Vigna Enrico VI is made from the Villero vineyard in Castiglione Falletto. This is a more mineral-driven, balsamic expression of Nebbiolo. Medium in body, the wine shows plenty of complexity as it opens in the glass, along with the mentholated notes that are typical of this site. Ideally the wine needs a few years in bottle to come together, but it is also delicious today with a few hours of aeration. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

Drink 2010 - 2020

Le Macchiole's 2004 Scrio (Syrah) is a wild, exotic wine that flows from the glass with a compelling array of earthiness, mint, dark fruit, herbs, espresso and toasted oak. This sweet, layered wine possesses superb clarity and detail with an incredible lightness on the palate that is achieved notwithstanding its density. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.

Le Macchiole releases its wines later than most estates on the Tuscan coast, so readers will find the 2004s in the market, while the 2005s are due to arrive this Fall. Proprietor Cinzia Merli and long-time oenologist Luca D'Attoma have turned out a glorious set of 2004s. The 2005 vintage proved to be much more challenging as the damp, fresh growing season made it hard to achieve full ripeness. These are pretty wines, but they aren't quite at the level of the estate's finest efforts.

The 2003 Scrio (100% Syrah) is another terrific effort from Le Macchiole. Packed with clove, cinnamon, sweet dark fruit, toasted oak and mint notes, it is opulent and concentrated yet light on its feet, boasting extraordinary length and an eternal finish defined by a lingering note of sweetness. It, too, has improved considerably over the last few months and there is plenty of fruit to balance the tannins of the vintage. Simply put, it is a knock-out effort from this very challenging harvest. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2015.

The 2000 Chianti Classico's deep ruby/purple color is followed by dense, monolithic, ripe, concentrated, chewy fruit that has not yet taken on the secondary nuances found in the 1999 and 1997 Chiantis. The 2001 Tenuta di Belguardo, made from Bordeaux grapes, is rather California-Australia-like in its coconut, vanilla, black fruit nose, more concentrated and intense than the Morellino di Scansano but still a bit austere and severe on the close. Belguardo is the property of the Mazzei family, owners of Castello di Fonterutoli in Chianti, among the first to move into the Maremma in search of new territory to plant vineyards. The vines are still young here, and there is unquestionably much margin for improvement in the wines. Drink: 2006-2014.

Drink 2010 - 2018

The 2003 Barolo Cannubi appears to have been especially affected by the scorching heat of the vintage, which is no surprise given the higher percentage of sand in the vineyard. All the classic Cannubi notes are here - from the perfumed aromatics to the soft, sweet fruit - but ultimately the wine's balance is compromised by the presence of excessively hard, green tannins which abruptly clip the finish. I have tasted this wine on numerous occasions from barrel, tank and bottle and it has always presented essentially the same qualities. Bottle age may help, but only to a limited extent. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2018.

The 2001 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata is the perfect way to cap off this strong series. The 2001 presents a multitude of aromas and flavors including roses, minerals, smoke, tar and sweet red fruit in a stunning display of sensual elegance. Today it comes across as open-knit and incredibly expressive. It is hard to say if it will shut down at some point or continue to offer the broad window of drinkability that is the hallmark of many wines from this vineyard. Regardless, it is a great privilege to get a glimpse of this monumental wine at such an early stage. Very deeply colored. Gorgeous, open nose is another expression of the modern style featuring sexy, sweet dark berry fruit with subtle notes of cocoa, coffee, chocolate, spice, and smoke. Similar to its brethren in the mouth, the 2000 has much in common: richness, density, extract, power, tannin, concentration, alcohol, and wonderful acidity. It's beautifully balanced, thoroughly delicious, and drinking surprisingly well tonight, much more expressive than the 1999. Very long, consistent finish. By itself, the Dal Forno's 2000 is a fabulous Amarone, but no match for the otherworldly (RP gave us permission to use his word) 1997.

Franchetti's 2005 Tenuta di Trinoro is shaping up to be another winner. Officially listed as 63% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot, Franchetti says the percentage of Merlot is closer to 90%. Tasted from tank, this sample of the final blend presents generous notes of blueberries, blackberries, graphite, minerals and sweet toasted oak on a full-bodied frame. It is an incredibly pure and expressive effort, with superb intensity and length, as well as exceptional overall balance. It offers outstanding potential and may very well turn out to be another profound wine from this estate. "In 2005 we had a picture-perfect harvest," says Franchetti. "In fact you couldn’t have scripted a better set of conditions. The Merlot we brought in was beautiful. Then it started to rain in October, and that compromised the rest of our harvest. Thankfully 2006 is a more normal vintage. I was starting to get sick of all this Merlot," says Franchetti with a laugh. "The 2005 saw a brief period of roughly 7 months in oak prior to being racked into cement. "I used to give my wines 18 months in new oak because that is what conventional wisdom held, but with the 2005 I thought the wine was starting to take on too many oak flavors so I moved it into cement where it will stay until it is bottled". Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.
