DOMAINE GAUBY – MUNTADA 2003

Review by: David Schildknecht
Wine Advocate: Issue 173, October 2007
Rating: 95 POINTS

Gauby’s 2003 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Muntada featuring Syrah and Carignan with lesser bits of Grenache and Mourvedre, and matured in barriques and demi-muids smells so floral you’d swear it had been co-fermented with Viognier or Chenin. Soy and fresh black fruits, toasted nuts and herbal nuances complete the aromatic picture. On the palate, it displays some of the roasted richness one expects of this vintage, yet with wafting florality and an invigorating fresh berry component. The contrast and marriage here of creamy texture with incisive grip and kinetics is amazing, and the finish is intriguingly mineral and almost perpetually dynamic.
