Description
Machir Bay is a gorgeous sherry-finished malt from Islay’s newest distillery, Kilchoman. This was released in 2012 and is made up of 60% 3 year old, 35% 4 year old and 5% 5 year old whisky. All were aged in first fill bourbon barrels, before vatting and finishing in an Oloroso sherry butt for two months.
Nose: Smoked and malty nose with notes of cured ham, oysters with lemon and red wine vinegar, a touch of TCP and citrus zest.
Palate: Oaky and bittersweet with black pepper, toffee apples, dark chocolate, aniseed and warm, spicy peat. Very complex, with a development of star anise.
Finish: Very long and salty with sticking plasters and blackcurrant.
Overall: Not the peatiest of the Kilchomans, but certainly one of the most complex – really very good indeed.
