VINA SASTRE PESUS 2004

CSN Wine & Spirits, May 2008
Rating: 99 points
Drink now – 2050

The 2004 Pesus comes from a small parcel of 82-year-old Tempranillo with small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Yields were a microscopic 7-9 hectoliters per hectare. After fermentation in a special stainless steel tank, the wine was transferred into new French oak. It was racked further into new oak three times and aged for a total of 24 months in the oak. This 100-case cuvee is surely one of Spain’s greatest wines.
This truly is the stuff of legends. The colour sucked me in like a black hole. This was tasted in a line-up to amazing to describe (but considering that one of my least favourites out of this 34 bottles line-up was 2000 Lafite-Rothschild will give you an idea), and this was one of the toppers. Tasted blind, many among the tasters were going for Harlan. On the nose I was almost overpowered by a bouquet of licorice, lead pencil, espresso beans, leather, cedar, black currant, kirsch and violets. In the mouth, this wine exploded like the Deathstar in Star Wars: A new Hope, and filled my palate with shockwaves fruit, chocolate, spice and supple tannins. Pure, perfectly balanced and immensly concentrated, POW.
